Magnesium reacts with water to produce hydrogen and alkaline water.
It is used as an ingredient in hydrogen water to generate hydrogen to indicate alkalinity.

Leaving it in water will produce magnesium oxide and whitish magnesium hydroxide
Magnesium hydroxide is difficult to dissolve in water, but the saturated water solution is alkaline which indicates a weak base of about pH = 10.5.
